Sports Council President’s Message – February 2018

Mary Shea, Sports Council President

We had a pretty exciting month in Collier County sports.

In January 2018, Deputy County Manager, Deputy Director Sports Marketing Naples, Marco and Everglades Convention and Visitors Burea, Dan Sullivan Green Links Golf Villas at Lely Resorts & Tourist Development Council Mary Shea, Wood Spring Suites & The President of Sports Council, Margaret Bishop, James Hanrahan and Rick Graby from Parks and Recreation toured facilities to envision options for Collier County’s Sport Complex.

This sport task force visited two indoor venues and two outdoor venues. A variety of items were looked at, including, bathrooms, parking, materials, equipment, best practices utilized at the different facilities.

In Pickleball, the Southern Tropics Tournament, January 26th-28th, packed in 592 players and over 2,000 spectators.

The Sports Councils’ Tent had many visitors, while our member Pelican Larry’s served fantastic food. The raffle prizes were a GREAT HIT.

We had some super stars come visit including Jack Wert, Ed Caum, Nikki and the wonderful County Commissioner Donna Fiala!

Players and Spectators came from near and far and enjoyed this event and all the pleasure Naples offers.

People will be coming from all over the world and trained by the Amazing Simone Jardim.

This year’s Dimitri Cup has turned out to be the most successful ever. This is the 14th Annual Dimitri Cup, taking place across three weekends in January.

There were a total of 435 teams attending, coming as far away as Brazil and Canada!!

This event has grown huge since its inception in 2004. We now have to separate the age groups to different weekends of attendance .

  • The 1st Weekend hosted 8 thru 12 year old teams
  • The 2nd Weekend hosted 13 and 14 year old teams
  • The 3rd Weekend hosted 15 thru 19 year old teams

With the majority of the teams traveling into the Naples area for this event, we are told it generated approximate 1.6 million dollars in economic impact for that month of January!!

We are excited in anticipation of the opening of the New Sports Complex in the next 2 years, as we can continue to grow with this event and the others that we host in Naples fl.

Don’t forget to take in the many activities of the Chubb Classic, from February 12th – 18th. There will be plenty of fun for everyone
